Pat IgoeIt was Mike Dodd’s wish that CPR acknowledge the work of young presenters learning their radio craft at CPR. As promised, at the CPR Xmas BBQ his good friend Pat Igoe (pictured) announced the inaugural winner is Monica Lewis. Monica started at the station while still in school and has gone onto present a variety of programs including, most recently, the ROCK show. Monica is now pursuing work in Melbourne and hopes to continue with community radio there.            CONGRATULATIONS MONICA

The Woodford Folk Festival is one of Australia’s most iconic and longest running festivals. Every summer from December 27 to January 1, tens of thousands of people of all ages make their annual pilgrimage to ‘Woodfordia’ (one-hour north of Brisbane, Queensland) to immerse themselves in a week-long celebration of music, art, culture, community and ceremony. The 4ZZZ team will be presenting three hour-long broadcasts, capturing the vibe of the festival through interviews and live performances. CPR will schedule these programs on New Year Day at 2pm.

The biggest country music festival in Australia just has to be Tamworth. It is not only a festival for established performers but also the best up and coming artists from around the country.

Sunday 19th January—from 7pm it is the  annual Starmakers Final. It will be broadcast live on City Park Radio. Then the following Saturday evening, it is the Golden Guitars Awards Night.

Reelin’ In the Years  – Classic Album of the Month

Golden EarringGOLDEN EARRING  Moontan

One of the most under-rated albums of 1973 was Golden Earring’s “Moontan”.  This Dutch band had a huge worldwide hit in that year with ‘Radar Love”, which is featured on “Moontan”.

But many buyers of the single might have been put off buying the album because it only contained 5 tracks!

The full album version of Radar Love itself clocked in at a healthy 6.24 (edited for radio) but was easily outdone by Big Tree Blue Sea at 8.13, Vanilla Queen at 9.20, and Are You Receiving Me 9.32.  Candy’s Going Bad was the short track at 6.12!

However, those who bought Moontan were rewarded with 5 tracks that displayed a diverse, innovative and engaging approach to song writing.  Lead singer, Barry Hay, bursts with energy on each track, and the rest of the band – George Kooymans – guitar, Rinus Gerritsen – bass, keyboards, and Cesar Zuiderwijk – drums, provide a dynamic tapestry of sound that takes you through a broad swathe of emotions.

40 years have passed, but Moontan deserves its rightful place among the best albums of 1973.
